The London Borough of Lewisham has a vast and diverse culture and it’s more than reflected in the array of markets in the area, ranging from the traditional fruit and veg affairs to a multitude of weekend farmers markets selling locally sourced and hand made produce to the residents.
Lewisham Market is a bustling strip of fruit merchants, traditional Caribbean foods, assorted housewares and haberdashery style stalls to footwear, clothing and more. Fresh fish is always on hand and you know where you can get hold of some beautiful seasonal blooms and flowers. Open Mondays to Saturday from 9am to 5.30 pm there can be up to 64 stalls, whilst Sunday is open from 10am to 4pm. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Sausage Man whilst you’re there!
Hop down the road and you’ll find Catford Market (Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat), a small multicultural affair with some top quality food stuffs on offer. It’s just between The Broadway Theatre and the Shopping Centre and is well worth a visit if you’re nearby.
You’ll find a similar deal at Deptford Market (Wed, Fri and Sat) which sees the High Street closed to traffic as this traditional market takes over. A real local feature, as well as some global foods you’ll find all kinds of clothing, household products and a range of new and second hand bargains on Douglas Way.
If you’re looking for some prime organic produce head down to one of the boroughs five monthly farmers markets. Saturdays between 10 am and 4pm at Manor Park Gardens (1st Saturday of the month), Hilly Fields (2nd Saturday of the month) and Telegraph Hill Park (3rd Saturday of the month). Sundays you can get along to Blackheath’s weekly Farmers Market in the station car park from 10am til 2pm or Deptford Park on the 4th Sunday of the month.
